The study was divided into three phases; 1st phase was a two-week inpatient period in which the participants ate an energy balanced diet; 2nd was an outpatient phase for eight weeks where participants consumes either glucose or fructose sweetened beverages together with their self-selected diet; and the 3rd and the final phase was a two-week inpatient segment from where the participants drank fructose or glucose sweetened beverages together with an energy balanced diet.

As a result, individuals from both groups had a similar weight gain, but those who are in the fructose group had a significant increase in the bell fat. Contrary to the expectations, fasting triglyceride levels rose in the glucose group while it is remaining constant in the fructose group.

At those in the fructose group had also increased hepatic lipid production. To top it all, fasting plasma glucose had the insulin level increases and insulin sensitivity decreases for those who are in the fructose group.

According to a senior consultant at the Division of Endocrinology at the University Medicine Cluster National Health system, Singapore, one important message of this study was the people should refrain from having too much sweetened drinks.
