Other Hair Replacement Alternatives
At some point in the Anagen phase, an unknown signal causes the follicle to go into the Catagen phase. During that phase, a final club hair, which lacks a root, is formed. When the club hairs fall out, the follicle rests.
The resting phase is known as the Telogen phase. In the sudden hair loss process, many of the follicles enter the Telogen phase at the same time. Normally, only about 10% of the follicles are in the Telogen phase at any given time. When people find that their hairs are falling out in handfuls, the condition is described by doctors as Telogen effluvium, a type of alopecia caused by physical or psychological stress.
The physical problems that can cause Telogen effluvium include nutritional deficiencies, labor and delivery, low or high thyroid production and drug side effects. Any severe psychological stress, such as the loss of a loved one, could cause it. But, because the hair loss process is relatively slow, it takes several months before the alopecia to be noticeable. So, people have often recovered from the stress that caused it and the two things don't seem to be related.
In male and female pattern baldness, the alopecia is not sudden; it happens over a period of many years. The follicles do not suddenly stop producing or enter the Telogen phase all at one time. They go through the normal cycles, but each time that they enter the active phase, the hairs produced are thinner, shorter and lighter in color.
